In May of 1998 Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Laramie, Wyoming was murdered, a hate crime that has served as one of the major milestones of the modern LGBT rights movement. Very shortly after the murder, a theater company, The Tectonic Theater Project (under the direction of Tony-nominated and Obie-winning playwright Moises Kauffman), went to Laramie and interviewed many of the people in the town about the crime and its wake.  From those interviews, they developed a play called “The Laramie Project,” which was very highly reviewed, turned into an HBO movie, and has been seen on stage by over 30 million people.
